How to write a melody for beginners

You do not need advanced theory to write a first melody. Start with one small idea, repeat it, change one thing, and decide whether the ending should feel finished or open.

1

Start with stable notes

Use 1, 3, or 5 so the melody feels connected to the key.

2

Repeat a short motif

Repeat a two- or three-note idea before you vary it. Repetition makes a melody memorable.

3

Add one leap

A 1 to 5 leap can make a simple melody feel wider and more confident.

4

Choose the ending

End on 1 for a finished feeling, 5 for openness, or 7 if you want tension.

Best first exercise

Write seven notes using only 1, 3, 5, and 6. Keep the first two notes the same, then change the final note and listen to how the phrase changes.
